Here's how to find out:

  1. Enter your domain name in the "Trace It" box, then click "Trace It".
  2. When the Traceroute report displays "Done" find the IP number on the last line (above the word Done)
    Tracing to AdvertiseNow.com...
    ...
    11 66.192.248.165 (66.192.248.165) 45.166 ms...
    12 advertisenow.com (66.193.47.182) 45.137 ms...
    Done!
  3. Highlight the IP number and copy it or write the number down so that you can refer to it in the next step. In the example above, we've highlighted our IP number in Blue.
  4. Place your cursor in the address bar of your browser, remove the current contents and replace it with http://theipnumberfromstep3 (Example: http://66.193.47.182). Click Go or press Enter to display the site that's at this IP.
  5. If your web site is displayed in the browser then your site is most likely on a dedicated IP1. If another web site comes up instead of yours, then your web site is most likely on a shared IP2, meaning that there are other web sites sharing the same IP number as yours.

Learn more about dedicated IP numbers and why every web site owner should have one.

  1. If a web site's domain name is in the 1st position of the shared IP's domain range, then a web site could appear like it's on a dedicated IP number when it isn't.
  2. If you have recently opened a new web site account and you have been assigned a dedicated IP number, but you haven't placed your home page in the account yet, a default "coming soon" page could appear in place of your web site.
